Abstract

We simultaneously measure the velocity of a liquid microjet ejected from a microtube and the pressure impulse of the underwater shock front in the microtube using high-resolution background-oriented schlieren (BOS) technique, which utilizes a high-resolution camera and a microdot background pattern. Remarkably, the linear relation between the velocity of the microjet and the pressure impulse of the shock front is observed for the first time. Such relation was theorectically/numerically predicted by Peters et al. JFM (2013). In addition, we experimentally confirmed that the linear relation does not hold for the cases with secondary cavitation in the liquid bulk.
