Abstract
Currently, the Comprehensive Violence Prevention and Protection Program (CVPPP) is being used. We have constructed a way to teach the CVPPP in which the nurses role-play and video record different scenarios. They then watch and discuss a playback of the scenes. The purpose of this study is to clarify the characteristics of the CVPPP teaching method developed by us. The research method used was qualitative. The subjects were 52 nurses, all belonging to the mental hospital staff. They discussed, as a group, what they learned from the program. What they learned was broken down into seven categories: A deeper understanding of the effect of a positive attitude on nursing care, an understanding of the de-escalation technique, an understanding of the team-technique, an understanding of the importance of debriefing, an awareness from playing the role of a patient, integration of the CVPPP theory joined with their nursing experience, and an expanded awareness based on the objective viewing of the role played scenarios. The findings suggests that role-playing exercises, video recording of those exercises and reviewing the video with a trainer as a part of the CVPPP might further enhance learning.
