Multiple gender representations in ritual

A case of domestic ancestor spirit cult in Upper Burma

Abstract

Recent anthropological studies on Mainland Southeast Asia have often tried to apply gender representations in texts to understand practical gender relation. However, such attempts raise a problem that may disregard practical aspect of gender and complicated situation between gender representations and practice. This presentation attempts to show an aspect of dynamic interaction between gender representations and practice, focusing on contradictory gender representations in a ritual.
