The purpose of this study was to elucidate the trends in nursing studentsʼobservation and assessment of respiration and cardiovascular system found during a simulation exercise for nursing students. Descriptive records of 25 students were used for analysis. The participants observed and assessed the patient immediately after surgery. A record sheet used in usual simulations was given to the participants. The recorded observation items were analyzed using IBM SPSS Text Analytics for Survey (TAfS), and assessments were analyzed qualitatively. The observed respiration items included percutaneous oxygen saturation (88%), respiration rate (48%), respiratory sound (48%) and others. The observed cardiovascular items included the body temperature (84%), blood pressure (76%), coldness of the extremities (60%), and others. The most listed respiration and cardiovascular assessments were simple descriptions such as “no abnormal values”. Thus, in prebriefing, it is necessary to review what has already been learned and improve the preparation for correct observation and assessment even in short-time simulation exercises.
