Abstract

This paper aims to make clear how Web-GIS enables local people to manage regions by their own power. From 2002 through 2003, Shimane Prefectural Mountainous Region Research Center has newly developed Web-GIS, which includes environmental search system, forest management system, wild animal management system and agricultural product advertising system. These systems offer regional information on Internet maps, which allow local people to input their own information including photographs after they fill registration forms. Web-GIS can make it possible for local people to manage their regions according to widely shared information. For further development of Web-GIS, correspondents, such as rangers, will be needed in each field of mountainous region.
