Abstract
Recent studies suggest that the therapy of hypertension with β-blocking agents may result in changes of the serum levels of lipids: increase of total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG), and decrease of HDL-cholesterol. The present paper describes the effects of long term therapy of hypertension with a β-1 selective blocking agent, acebutolol (400mg/day for 6 to 18 months) on the serum levels of TC, HDL-cholesterol, TG, LDL (low density lipoprotein), VLDL (very low density lipoprotein) and LCAT (lecithine cholesterol acyltransferase). None of the serum lipid fraction showed a significant change during the therapy with acebutolol. Four case reports were also presented. These results suggest that the therapy of hypertension with acebutolol has more advantage than the other β-blocking agents in respect of lipid metabolism.
