Abstract
When human serum was incubated with the slices of rat adipose tissue in vitro, the decrease of serum triglyceride and VLDL, and the shift of apo C and E proteins in VLDL to HDL were observed by the addition of dextran sulfate. However, the elevation of HDL, especially HDL2 cholesterol, could not confirmed in vitro with the heat inactivated serum. Shift of VLDL apo E protein was carried out only incompletely and the percentages of cholesterol and phospholipids increased in VLDL. By contrast, HDL and HDL2 cholesterol increased significantly in fresh active serum and enough amounts of apo C and E proteins in VLDL were transported to HDL fraction.
These results indicate that the action of LCAT is necessary for the HDL formation from VLDL or the shifts of cholesterol and apolipoprotein C and E to HDL by lipolysis together with lipoprotein lipase.
