Abstract
It is well known that the onset of flutter induced in bridge decks is susceptible to an incident angle of wind.To evaluate the effect of such an inclination on the proposed bridges, a provision of the incident angle range up to±7 degrees is prescribed in the present wind design code for Honshu-Shikoku bridges. In this study, the upper limit of the incident angle range is examined by obtaining the expected value of an excursion time over a level of inclination due to vertical wind speed fluctuation. The result of about ±3 degrees at maximum is concluded to be sufficient to evaluate the aerodynamic instability of bridge decks.
