A 34-year-old male with hoarseness was transferred from another hospital because of a neck mass. Ultrasonography and computed tomography revealed a mass 3.0 cm in diameter which was in the inferior part of the left lobes of the thyroid gland. Fine needle aspiration cytology suggested that the tumor was malignant. A left thyroid lobectomy was performed with the diagnosis of malignant thyroid tumor. The center of the tumor was outside of the thyroid gland and the thyroid gland was partially invaded. Microscopically, the epithelial cells had features of squamous differentiation as well as cytologic features of malignancy, and thymic elements were found around the tumor. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were immunoreactive for CD5. The final diagnosis was thymic carcinoma. Thymothymectomy and radiotherapy was administered.
A rare case of cervical carcinoma is described, whose CD5 immunoreactivity appeared to support thymic derivation.
