In peripheral artery disease, younger patients have a lower mortality risk in the population, but have a higher risk ratio relative to the same-aged nationals. Furthermore, younger patients more likely have atherosclerotic risk factors. The prevalence of atherosclerotic risk factors is considerably different between peripheral artery disease and coronary artery disease. These features would be important to discuss practical strategies for the management of atherosclerotic risk factors in peripheral artery disease. Referral of patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia to a vascular center would be another issue to be addressed in clinical practice.
