[Objective] To examine the relationship of nurses’ “behaviors” and “behavioral intentions” in advance care planning (ACP) for diabetic patients to the influencing factors “attitudes,” “subjective norms,” “facilitators (conceptual knowledge and intervention skills knowledge),” and “inhibitors (barriers)” generated based on the theory of planned behavior.
[Methods] One certified diabetes nurse/facility and five nurses/facility involved in diabetes nursing from 137 facilities with certified diabetes nurses, for a total of 822 participants with whom agreement was obtained. The questionnaire was developed based on the theory of planned behavior ; multiple regression analysis was conducted with ACP’s “behavioral intention” and “behavior” as dependent variables and influencing factors as independent variables.
[Results] The factors that influenced “behavioral intention” were “knowledge of intervention skills” (β=.313, p=.001), “attitude” (β=.238, p=.009), and “conceptual knowledge” (β=−.185, p=.022).
[Conclusion] “Knowledge of intervention skills,” “Attitude,” and “Conceptual knowledge” significantly influenced the “behavioral intention” of ACP among nurses working with diabetic patients.
