Abstract

Liquid-liquid extraction equilibria of mercury(II) by dicyclohexyl-24-crown-8 (C-24) in chloroform or xylene at 298 K were elucidated. The extraction equilibria are affected by the chloride ion concentration in the aqueous phase regardless of sodium chloride and hydrochloric acid concentrations. The formation constants of the extraction reaction expressed by the following equation
HgCl2 + C-24 HgCl2 C-24
were obtained at 7.0×102 dm3/mol for chloroform diluent and 1.9×103 dm3/mol for xylene diluent.
