Abstract
The chemical formation of a silver mirror on glass is influenced by a presence of foreign substances in silvering solution. A large variety of Organic acids were added in Formalin reducing solution, so that the quantity of every organic acid was such as 0.001 mol per Il. of the final solution to investigate the effect of the organic acid on a silver mirror.
The results were summarized as follows;
(1). Lactic acid, Formic acid and acetic acid greatly increased the deposition of silver; and tataric acid, Benzoic acid and succinic acid increased in some degree, while citric acid and picric acid exhibited a negative effect.
(2). A smooth, fine surface of a silver mirror without traces of pin-holes resulted upon the addition of these acids, even if citric acid was introduced. With picric acid this was not the case. The formation of a smooth, uniform mirror by the addition of these acids is supposed to be the result of these acting as something of a protective colloid upon reduced silver particles.
