Abstract
Ultrasonic waves was applied during brazing of alumina to different metals such as Ti, Ni, Nb, Fe, and AISI 304 stainless steel using the Zn-5 mass% Al brazing filler alloy. The intensity of ultrasonic wave was 1 kW and 18 kHz. Different reaction products were formed at the alumina-metals interfaces including solid solutions and intermetallic compounds. The ultrasonic waves enhance the wetting on the ceramic/filler and metal/filler interface. The alumina-Nb joints provided the best bond strength value among the different couples, since this is largely due to its low α*E-factor. The high mismatch in thermal coefficient between the brazing filler and the AISI 304 stainless caused a separation at the interface, and produced the weakest joint among the other couples.
