Abstract
A hot spot, a local area with high temperature, appeared in a SmBa2Cu3O7-δ ceramic rod when a dc voltage above the threshold was applied at room temperature. Under low oxygen partial pressure, a damped sinusoidal oscillation in the electrical current was observed after the appearance of the hot spot. The frequency of the current oscillation was found to increase when the thermal conductivity of ambient gas increased. The current oscillation associated with the hot spot is expected to be applicable to a variable low-frequency oscillator.
