Abstract
Fine particle size and high crystallinity red emitting phosphor Y2O3 : Eu was synthesized by the gel combustion reaction of mixed yttrium and europium nitrates peptized with glycine. After ignition at 300°C in a muffle furnace, fine particle agglomerated Y2O3 : Eu with a porous structure was obtained due to the very rapid gas evaporation from the viscous gel. The largest emission intensity was observed from the ignited products at glycine/nitrate ratios of 1.5 and 1.75, which corresponds to high combustion temperatures. The dispersion of the particles may be improved by changing the firing method.
