OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the therapeutic effect of minodronic acid hydrate (MIN) for three years in a total of 51 osteoporosis patients.
METHODS: Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured the femoral neck until three years later using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The 51 patients were classified into two groups: the BMD improved group (36 patients), in which femoral BMD was improved three year later, and the BMD non-improved group (15 patients), in which femoral BMD was not improved. We evaluated ineffective factor of MIN therapy.
RESULTS: The mean tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b (TRACP-5b) at the start of therapy of the BMD non-improved group was significantly higher than the BMD improved group. Only the BMD non-improved group was appeared the new vertebral fractures.
DISCUSSION: The high-scored TRACP-5b at the start of therapy was recognized as ineffective factor of MIN therapy.
CONCLUSION: It is possible that TRACP-5b was involved in therapeutic effect at the start of MIN therapy.
