Abstract
Purpose: The aim was to analyze 10 cases of primary appendiceal carcinoma resected in our hospital between January 1997 and April 2014. Methods: We analyzed the clinical and pathological characteristics, operation, chemotherapy, and prognosis of the cases. Results: The median age was 71 years (44-86). We performed right hemicolectomy in 2, ileocecal resection in 7, and cecal resection in 1. Histological type was well-differentiated adenocarcinoma in 6, papillary adenocarcinoma in 2, and signet-ring cell carcinoma in 2. Tumor depth was T3 and T4 in 9. Pathological stage was Stage I in 1, II in 5, IIIa in 2, IIIb in 1, and IV in 1. Postoperative median follow-up duration was 48 months (2-139). Regarding prognosis, 5 cases remain alive without recurrence, 2 died from other diseases without recurrence, 2 died from recurrence of peritoneal dissemination, and 1 remains alive with synchronous peritoneal dissemination. Perforation of the appendix was found in 4 cases, and 2 of them died from recurrence of peritoneal dissemination, and the other 2 remain alive without recurrence with postoperative chemotherapy. Five cases without perforation were without recurrence. Conclusion: Primary appendiceal carcinoma may have a tendency of perforation and recurrence of peritoneal dissemination, so postoperative chemotherapy may be more important.
