Abstract

A 65-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of anemia. As a result of examination, type 2 advanced cancer was found in the rectosigmoid and an abdominal CT scan revealed a left adrenal mass. MRI and FDG-PET examination were useful for the diagnosis of adrenal metastasis of rectal cancer. Laparoscopic low anterior resection and left adrenalectomy were performed. Although laparotomy was required in order to resect the rectal cancer because of the tumor size, the adrenal gland could be removed laparoscopically. There are few reports on synchronous and solitary adrenal metastasis of colorectal cancer, and resection is desirable if possible. A diagnosis of adrenal metastasis cannot be confirmed before surgery. Resection has diagnostic significance. Curative resection is the standard treatment at present but its contribution to the prognosis is unknown; further study is needed.
