A 32-year-old patient with ulcerative colitis had been treated with sulphasalazine and predonisolone for 8 years. His symptoms had been remitting and relapsing. In October '84, he noted increased bloody stools, which did not respond to steroids. Fecal bacterial culture revealed Salmonella at the range of 105/gm of feces. Subsequently, he was treated with chloromycetin 1.5gm/day and fosmicin 1.5gm/day and his symptoms were improved. It is rare to complicate Salmonella enterocolitis during the course of ulcerative colitis, but when symptoms of ulcerative colitis do not improve after steroid therapy, infectious colitis, caused by Campylobacter, entero invasive E. coli, Yersinia and Salmonella should be suspected.
