Abstract
Urodynamic and cysto-urethrographic studies were done of 20 patients (11 males and 9 famales) who had undergone abdomino-perineal excision of rectal cancer. The examinations were carried out 63 times: 13 times before surgery, 15 times one month after surgery, 15 times 3 months after surgery and 20 times after the 6th postoperative month. Clinical eva-luation of the patients showed that there were 2 female patients complaining of urinary incon-tinence. Characteristic findings in the postoperative patients were as follows : 1) lack or decrease of contraction of detrusor muscles, 2) multiple peaks in the urinary flow curves, 3) posterior displacement of the urinary bladder, 4) insufficient opening of the bladder neck upon micturition, and 5) opening of the angle between the urinary bladder and urethra.
The results of the present studies showed that paralysis of the detrusor muscles and displa-cement of the urinary bladder are found in almost all postoperative patients and these are considesed to be the causes of difficulty in micturition or urinary incontinence in these patients.
