A sixty-five year-old man with bleeding stomal varices was successfully treated by sclerotherapy. Five years ago, he had abdominoperineal resection of rectum for rectal cancer, and at the same time, liver cirrhosis and esophageal varices were pointed out. About one year after the operation, he complained stomal bleeding, which was initially managed by compression hemostasis using adrenaline solution. Thereafter, sclerotherapy was indicated for frequent stomal bleeding. Sclerosing agent (ethanol amineoleate) was injected subcutaneously into four or five points of the variceal vein using 27 gauge needle. Effective hemostasis was obtained without complication.
Our experience indicates that sclerotherapy is safe, easy and effective treatment of bleeding stomal varices.
