Abstract
The performance characteristics of Al-Zn galvanic anode in artificial sea water have been studied in the laboratory. The effects on anode performance of current densities (0.05-3mA/cm2) and alloy compositions (4, 6, 8, 10, 19 and 65% Zn) have been investigated quantitatively.
The principal conclusions derived from this work are as follows:
(1) The anode potentials of Al-Zn alloys (4-19% Zn) measure about -950 to -950mV (referred to sat. calomel electrode).
(2) Anodic polarization, as affected by time or current density, is scarcely recognized for these alloys (4-19% Zn).
(3) In quantity of current per gram, these alloys are superior to Mg and Zn anode. In current density under 1mA/cm2, Al-4% Zn alloy shows the highest value.
(4) Pitting corrosion is notable, and this ununiform anode consumption is a great fault.
