Fertility, external characters and somatic chromosomes of F₂ and F₃ progenies of hybrids raised between Triticum turgidum (n=14) and Secale cereale (n=7).

Abstract

1. Fertility of F₂ plants : - The seed setting per spikelet of the F₂ plants having 2n=42 chromosomes shows 2.4 times the fertility in percentage compared with the plants having 2n=41 chromosomes (Table 1). 2. Germination of F₃ seeds : - The seed obtained from F₂ plants having 2n=41 chromosomes shows higher percentage of germination than the seeds from that of 2n=42 cbromosomes (Table 2). 3. Chromosomes of F₃ plants : - Somatic chromosomes of 163 individuals of F₃ plants showed that they varied from 39 to 60 and their modes were 42 (Table 3). 4. Fertility of F₃ plants : - The fertile individuals having 2n=42 chromosomes in 117 fertile F₃ plants show the highest percentage with regard to the seed setting per spikelet (Table 6).
