Abstract The Basic Act for the Promotion of Death Investigation came into effect in April 2020. Article 6 of this Act stipulates the promotion of human resource development and research related to cause of death investigations at universities. In accordance with this, the Cause of Death Investigation Promotion Plan requires universities to enhance educational content and strengthen practical skills. In the 2022 Revision of the Model Core Curriculum for Dental Education in Japan, the 2016 revision item “B-2-3) Personal identification by dentists” was changed to “C-4-4 Forensic Odontology,” establishing new learning objectives. However, the nationwide status of education in forensic odontology remained unclear. Therefore, we conducted a survey targeting 29 dental schools in Japan. The results showed that 38 full-time faculty members at 16 institutions and 14 part-time faculty members at 7 institutions were assigned to forensic dental science. Furthermore, 21 schools offered required subjects related to forensic odontology. The content of lectures varied considerably. Lectures and practical exercises were mainly conducted in the 3rd through 6th years, although differences in grade composition and educational formats were observed among dental schools. Going forward, continuous surveys and information sharing through academic societies will be necessary to enhance the educational system and clarify common objectives.
