Abstract
Caesarean section was performed on a cold-blooded 13-year-old pregnant mare weighing 630kg to collect fetal cells and serum. Laughing gas and oxygen, together with a small amount of halothane, were administered to the mare via a cuffed intratracheal tube. The anesthetized mare in dorsal recumbency was incised for 20cm on the linea alba between navel and breast. Heart beat and spontaneous respiration were observed in the foal weighing 20kg. The uterine incision was sutured with a Lambert pattern of No. 0 Dexon® and the linea alba with a knotted pattern of No. 1 Dexon®. The mare remained clinically normal for about 3 months and was crossed 110 days after the operation.
