Abstract
At necropsy of 45 foals 1-73 days of age, 12 cases of gastric ulcer were found and investigated histologically. Multiple ulcers were present in the proventricular region adjacent to the margo plicatus of the stomach. Perforated ulcer was seen in 2 of the 12 cases. The squamous cell layer in the proventricular region was edematous. The basal cell layer sometimes disappeared histologically. A part of the squamous cell layer often had a parakeratotic lesion and a separation was observed in its mid-layer. Angiogram was taken to investigate the distribution of arteries in the stomach. As a result, blood supply was sparser in the proventricular region than in the glandular region. The microvascular alteration of the submucosa might predispose a foal to the ulceration in the nonglandular portion of the stomach.
