Abstract
ADI has higher strength and toughness compared with FCD, which has consequently led to demands for mechanical components made of ADI. Mechanical components also often require resistance to wear in addition to strength and machinability. In this report, the wear resistance of ADI to normalized and quenched carbon steels (O.1∼0.8 % C) compared with FCD is examined in both the dry state or when lubricated with oil. The results obtained are as follows : The wear losses of ADI (JIS FCAD 900, 1200) and FCD 400 without lubricant decrease with increasing carbon content for quenched carbon steel. FCD 400 permits the largest wear loss and FCAD 1200 the smallest. The wear losses increase with increasing sliding load and sliding speed more than approximately 1.3 m/s, but these rates of increase are greater for FCD 400 than for ADI. While, the wear resistances of ADI and FCD to normalized or quenched carbon steels remarkably improve with the existence of lubricant oil and more of less no difference was observed between the graphite cast irons.
