Abstract
The graphite structures of most cast irons are improved by the inoculation and/or spheroidization of these melts. The alteration of graphite structures from spheroidal to flake can be controlled by the melt treatment Modified Inmold Process. The formation of such graphite structures was investigated by changing the position of the sprue and the cross-sectional areas of both the inlet and outlet of the reaction chamber in this process. Many kinds of delayed casting processes were realized by changing the timing of the flow and filling of the spheroidized and inoculated iron melts into each cavity. The alteration of the graphite structure could be controlled remarkably by these processes. Such graphite structure control was obtained with CE values from 4.2 to 4.4% and residual Mg over 0.025 %.
