Abstract

Because the wear of crushing blades at recycling factories causes such problems as decreased sorting efficiency, increased running costs, etc., the development of materials with excellent wear-resistance is required. In this study, the abrasive wear characteristics of spheroidal vanadium carbides (VC) with hardness of 2400HV (SCI-VCrNi, SCI-VMn, SCI-W) known to be a material with excellent wear resistance were evaluated using a Suga type wear testing machine. As a result, it was found that SCI-W had three times greater wear resistance than high chromium cast iron (12%Cr, 17%Cr). In addition, compared with high chromium cast iron with high initial hardness, spheroidal carbide cast iron showed excellent wear resistance. Abrasive wear is dependent not only on the initial hardness of materials, but also on the hardening of the matrix due to deformation induced transformation. Material hardening is thus important to enhance wear resistance.
