Abstract

  Microstructural and mechanical properties of stainless steel SUS316L molding fabricated by a selective laser melting method with different beam scanning patterns were investigated. Prominent strong microstructural texture or single-crystalline-like texture, was found to be expressed in specimens fabricated by laser beam scanning along only one axis (i. e., X-scan) as compared to those fabricated by varying scanning directions at 90 degrees at every layer (i. e., XY-scan). The preferred orientation of the microstructural texture of specimens fabricated with the X-scan was [011] along the fabrication direction (z-axis) and [001] along the scanning direction (x-axis). These findings suggest that microstructural and mechanical properties based on crystal orientation can be controlled by simply varying the gradient angle of the molding to be fabricated.
