Abstract

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a common condition in elderly women, and coexisting uterine malignancy must be considered. We report on four cases of pelvic organ prolapse complicated by malignant tumors of the uterus. Two cases were negative for endometrial cytology, and one case had not undergone endometrial cytology but showed endometrial thinning on ultrasound. One patient had positive endometrial cell cytology at the first visit and results of endometrial biopsy was endometrioid adenocarcinoma grade 2 . Although POP is basically a benign disease which mainly affects elderly women, it is necessary to pay a close attention to the possibility of malignant tumors before surgery and to conduct appropriate evaluations and provide the patient with preoperative explanations. In addition, if a malignant tumor is incidentally diagnosed after surgery, it is necessary to take measures in accordance with the guidelines and conduct careful follow-up observation.
