Abstract
The amount of CO2 fixation was estimated in forty year-old Todo fir (Abies sachalinensis) plantations in three different regions (Toyotomi, Rubeshibe and Kuriyama) in Hokkaido, Japan. The spacing includes 2000, 4000 and 6000 trees/ha in respective region. 450-500 tones/ha of CO2 were fixed in above ground biomass irrespective of spacing and regions. 95-115, 35-40 and 20-25 tones/ha of CO2 were fixed in A0 horizon of plantations in Toyotomi, Rubeshibe and Kuriyama respectively. Amount of CO2 in below ground biomass of Toyotomi plantation was estimated at 900-950 tones/ha and those of Rubeshibe and Kuriyama were 300-480 tones/ha. Total amount of CO2 was highest in Toyotomi plantation, in which 36 tones/ha /year of CO2 was fixed. The rate of the fixation is approximately equal to the emission rate of CO2 for 6 house hold (17 people) in Japan.
