Abstract
The authors with a cooperation of the University of Tokyo Forest in Chichibu, developed a phenology calendar in a paper printed, DVD and web format using the videos taken everyday by two fixed observation video cameras in Chichibu forest. In the paper printed calendar, the pictures extracted from the videos have been used and by accessing to the web site or DVD calendar, you can watch the short video of forest view taken from the video cameras. The purpose of developing such an interactive calendar was to enhance the understanding of school children to the forest by providing them a chance to compare the views of forest in different seasons and marking their most favorite forest views. In this calendar, we used the pictures from 2001 to 2002 and arranged them into year 2004 calendar (i.e.: The date in 2001/2002 is corresponding to the same date in 2004). By arranging the pictures taken in 2001 and 2002 to the present year, we expected that the school children would accept the different views of forest as the passage of the days. We also added the names of birds and insects singing in the videos to the calendar as a part of the data of the day. We would like to examine the effect of these environmental learning materials to the school children by actually using these materials in the classroom.
