Abstract

 The geotectonic evolution of the Japanese Islands has traditionally been studied mainly in Southwest Japan, where pre-Cenozoic basement rocks occur extensively. Now, at the beginning of the 21st century, a major revision is being proposed (see Isozaki et al., this issue, for details).
