Abstract
In order to open up a new avenue of use for iron and steelmaking slag, the authors are developing the method for increasing the lateral resistance of pile foundations by using slag. It has been done by partially improving the subsurface ground around piles with various kinds of slag. As a part of the research, lateral cyclic load tests were carried out on steel pipe piles embedded in ground improved by iron and steelmaking slag. This paper presents the results of the tests, and the influence that the difference of physical and mechanical characteristics of slag have on the increase of lateral resistance of the pile.
