Abstract
The 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake seriously affected the East Japan. The coastal areas were damaged not only by the seismic shaking but also by the tsunami. In particular, collapse of the buildings, damage of levees, deposition of soils, and generation of huge amount of disaster waste were caused by tsunami. Tsunami deposits should be utilized as geo-materials, which are necessary for the reconstruction works, so as to minimize the volume of wastes disposed into the waste landfill sites. JGS Technical Committee on Geoenvironmental Engineering conducted a field investigation on 158 points in a submerged area extending 7 km east to west by 12 km north to south on 20-22nd December, 2011, in order to assess the situation of the tsunami deposits left on land. In this paper, a distribution characteristic of deposit was discussed based on the field investigation and various physicochemical properties of the tsunami deposits were evaluated with laboratory tests on total 1400 samples.
