A survey of the literature of the Brazilian mosses from 1821 to 1978 revealed 3690 taxa. In this number are included 1608 synonyms, 186 dubious species, nom. nud., hom. inval. and comb. inval.; 1896 species in 265 genera and 56 families are documented with location (State, City), with a list of publications in which they are mentioned. Also, included is a mention of all Brazilian moss literature.
