Abstract

To date among the cormophyta only in the mosses perforated water-conducting cells are not yet known. In the Pteridophyta and Gymnospermae different taxa show vessels and some liverworts perforated hydroids. In several taxa of mosses the endwalls are almost hydrolized but always still visible on TEM pictures. Since these structures are known for more than 10 years the presence of perforated hydroids can be expected. Water-conducting tissues of tropical mosses (“Bäumchenmoose”) of genus Hypopterygium were examined by SEM. H. commutatum presents structures resembling an ephedroid perforation plate (“vermutliche Rundperforationen”). These structures are not numerous and restricted to the branching areas.
