Abstract

The occurrence of perigonia, perichaetia, and sporophytes was ascertained in herbarium specimens of the five dioicous species (three anisosporous, two isosporous) of Macromitrium Brid. in Japan. Sporophytes are frequently observed in Japan in all five species. Different distributions of dwarf and normal males were found in the two isosporous species, M. gymnostomum Sull. et Lesq. and M. japonicum Dozy et Molk. The dwarf males of these species were widely distributed in Japan, while the normal males were scarce and restricted to low altitudes, and latitude on the Pacific Sea side.
