This study aimed to clarify the learning effects and issues of simulation exercise for fourth-year nursing university students. Interviews with participants in simulation exercises were used to extract the following five categories obtained through the exercises: [practical awareness gained from the experience of thinking like a nurse], [deeper learning through effective debriefing], [accelerated learning via a supportive environment], [opportunities to realize personal growth by leveraging past experience], and [clarification of personal learning challenges and increased motivation]. Exercise participants were able to utilize their experience and think like nurses, which led to improvements in their real-world awareness, learning, and sense of personal development. In addition, a supportive environment and effective debriefing may have encouraged independent learning and contributed to enhancing the motivation of the students. The favorable assessments and strong satisfaction exhibited by participants toward the exercise program implies that the exercises were effective. However, future challenges include devising ways of improving the self-confidence of students as well as designing, implementing and evaluating programs that take hospital discharges and home nursing into account.
