Abstract
The objective of this study is to clarify how the thermal environment is expressed over the four seasons by using Nagai Kafu's diary "Dannchoutei Nichijo ". In particular, the authors clarify the monthly frequency of use of the words "kan(cold,) " "sho(hot), " "ryo(cool), " "dan(warm), " and "rei(cold), " and how they are used with each other. As a result, "dan " is used as a confrontational expression when "kan " is used. "ryo " is used as a confrontational expression when "sho " is used. It was found that "rei " tends to be used during the off-season. Furthermore, it was shown that expressions are made according to the strength of the influence of heat and cold.
