Abstract
An accident of internal exposure took place on March 10, 1966 at National Institute of Radiological Sciences, when a researcher was engaged in preparation and fractionization procedures of Pu-239 solution to be used in the research project on internal exposure by Pu-239.
A man of 37 years old carrying out the procedure within a glovebox had his left forefinger accidentally stuck into through four-fold layers of rubber gloves by a highly contaminated needle of injection pump he had used in fractionization work, when he tried to dispose it by his right hand into a plastic tube held by his left hand.
Speedy and accurate determination of the contaminated portion of the finger and its levels of radioactivity followed by a surgical removal of contaminated tissues and other adequate medical treatments, including the administration of chelating agent, made the radiation hazards retained at the minimum.
This paper describes briefly the circumstances, causes and medical and health physical treatments of this accident.
