Immune aging has be clarified to be deeply involved in the aging process. A similar mechanism has been reported to exist in cochlear aging. The term ‘inflamm-aging,’ which combines chronic inflammation and aging, and oxi-inflamm-aging, which includes inflammatory oxidative stress, have been newly proposed. Oxi-inflamm-aging has been added to the term inflamm-aging (age-related chronic inflammation).
This article introduces basic research on anti-aging or immune rejuvenation using bone marrow transplantation, thymus transplantation, or inoculation of naïve T lymphocytes from an immunological perspective and discusses its clinical applications, based on the content of the presidential lecture “Anti-aging measures by preventing immune aging - prevention of age-related hearing loss” given by the author at the 4th Annual Conference of the 4th Annual Meeting of the Japan Society of Immunology Allergology and Infection in Otorhinolaryngology (Osaka, 2024).
