Abstract
A series of one-dimensional compression tests were performed on several types of soft and stiff clays evaluate the viscous property. The strain rate was changed stepwise several times and several creep loading tests were performed during otherwise monotonic loading, unloading and reloading in an automated way by using two types of oedometer apparatuses, load-controlled and displacement controlled. It was found that these testing methods are relevant to evaluate the viscous property of clay for general loading histories despite that the horizontal stress was not measured. Typical test data and empirical rules derived from the test results will be presented.
