Abstract
This study conducted a clinical analysis of the outcome of 35 patients with eosinophilic rhinosinusitis who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology of Kyushu University Hospital from 2005 to 2008. The patients (15 males and 20 females) had a mean age of 50.5 years (range, 31-73 years). Twenty of the 35 cases (57%) were complicated by asthma, while 5 (14%) were complicated by eosinophilic otitis media. The RIST positive rate was 52%. All patients showed a peripheral blood eosinophil count above the upper limit and that level decreased after ESS. Thirty patients (86%) had smell disturbances and those improved in 93% of the cases after ESS. The outcomes of ESS were significantly worse in the cases complicated by aspirin-induced asthma.
