Abstract
It is very important how to avoid post treatment dysphagia when we select treatment option for advanced oral cancer. These days, advancements of reconstruction method decrease post surgical impairment, on the other hand, progress of chemoradiotherapy improved survival rate. We need precise and simple method for evaluate swallowing ability and function after therapy of advanced oral cancer to make accurate dicision. This paper reports on the development of two improved methods for testing the swallowing ability which has been designed to assess dysphagia after therapy for oral and oropharyngeal cancer. 1) The MTFscore is a simple and practical assessment tool consisting of three subscales:Method of intake, Time of intake, and Food. The scale was administered to 41 oral cancer patients. The MTFscore significantly decreased among elderly patients. 2) The AsR score evaluates swallow efficiency and risk by focusing only on two (degree of aspiration and pharyngeal residue) of the various evaluation items of videofluorography. Now we are going to test validity and reliability of this scale by multicenter study.
