Abstract
We retrospectively investigated the clinical features and treatment outcomes of 164 cases of laryngeal cancer primarily treated at our hospital between 2002 and 2009.Of the 164 patients, 126 had glottic type tumors, 34 had supraglottic type and four had the subglottic type. Double cancer, including simultaneous and metachronous occurrence, accounted for 22.6% of all cases. The three-year overall survival rate was 93.8% for all cases, 96.0% for glottic type cases and 93.9% for the supraglottic type cases. The three-year larynx preservation rate was 70.1% overall, but was low in the advanced T cases, such as T3 (15.6%) and T4 (7.7%). The recurrence of the primary lesion occurred in 24 cases (14.6%), but 87.5% of these cases were cured by a salvage operation. No significant difference in the survival rates between the patients treated using different treatments were noted for T2 and T3 cases, so that CCRT was recommended as the first treatment. In order to improve the larynx preservation rate, it is necessary to change the regimen of chemotherapy for CCRT, and to introduce larynx-preserving operations for cases with local recurrence and radioresistant tumors.
