Treatment strategy for early tongue cancer − Indications for prophylactic neck dissection −

Abstract

We described review of previous reports and examination about our cases on treatment strategies for early tongue cancer, especially for indications of prophylactic neck dissection. The indications for prophylactic neck dissection or the extent to which omission of prophylactic cervical dissection is not necessarily clear, so the results of randomized controlled trials are awaited. Currently, a randomized controlled phase Ⅲ study (JCOG1601) has been conducted to verify the significance of prophylactic cervical dissection for Stage I / Ⅱ tongue cancer. This is a study to verify whether prophylactic neck dissection can be omitted in T1/2 tongue cancer with a tumor depth of 3 − 10 mm.
