Abstract
On 145 cases which complained chiefly of the olfactory disturbance, general observation was carried on.
And then, the relationship between the pneumatisation of parasinus of 50 patients suffering from chronic sinusitis and of 25 patients suffering from olfactory neurosis and their olfactory disturbance was observed and considered by means of roentgenograms.
The results were as follows:
1) As for the extent of olfactory disturbance, anosmia was of the highest percentage (60.7%), while as for the kind of disease, chronic sinusitis had a majority (53.1%).
2) Common cold or the inflammation of the upper respiratory tract often became the cause of olfactory disturbance.
3) Patients with hypotension had the tendency to cause olfactory disturbance.
4) No remarkable change of serum-Ca & K was noted.
5) The function of the autonomic nerve was generally stable.
6) Pneumatisation of the maxillary and the ethmoidal cavities of the patients suffering from chronic sinusitis with olfactory disturbances and of those suffering from olfactory neurosis was under-developed in many cases, and few well-developed cases were found in this study.
7) Patients with olfactory disturbances occupied a high percentage in the cases of under-developed pneumatisation in the frontal sinus.
